Another new EMR sales channel

First it was Dell offering a complete EMR package through Sam’s club. Now, Cerner has announced that it has teamed up with reseller CDW to offer a full suite of ambulatory practice management and EMR software:

As we move beyond the early adopter physicians we’ll see more of the traditional software channels being used for EMR software.

  1. Interesting stuff. I think we are going to see more of this in the US…and hopefully more in Canada. The cost of relying on a direct salesforce to go after, what is in effect a consumer market is far to high. Vendors like CDW, BestBuy, Wal-Mart, etc have scale, reach and a certain level of comfort for consumers and physicians.

The issue will be one of service. The physicians may think of an EMR as a consumer purchase, but few if any of the vendors offer shrink-wrapped software functionality. It will be interesting to see what kind of service offerings/partnerships that these distributors offer at the point of sale.
