Leveraging Private Sector Investment: Surescripts to Support Clinical Information Exchange

Surescripts, the largest e-Prescribing service provider in the US, is expanding its infrastructure to support the exchange of clinical information.   This investment by a private sector company will provide the health information exchange services needed by many of its 200,000 prescribers to meet meaningful use requirements and demonstrates how the private sector can play an important role in realizing the US vision for interoperable electronic health records.  According to a Health Data Management article, “Surescripts already supports interoperability standards of the NHIN Direct Project and NHIN Exchange initiatives, as well as Health Level Seven, Continuity of Care Record and Continuity of Care Document messages.”
