EHR safety reporting

The iHealth Alliance, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to protect the interests of patients and providers as healthcare increasingly moves online, has launched, a system for reporting electronic health record (EHR) safety issues. According to an article in Healthcare IT News, this new system “uses a standardized online format that will collect reports from physicians and other healthcare providers who use EHRs and create reports that medical societies, professional liability carriers and government agencies, such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), will use to help educate providers on the potential challenges that EHR systems may bring.”

Interestingly, EHRevent is modeled after other national reporting  systems including the one used in the aviation industry.  According to the Healthcare IT News article, “its reports include issues related to software problems, inadequate user training, security breaches and near-misses. Reports will be confidential but officials say they will be used to better understand challenges associated with the adoption and implementation of EHRs and to improve patient safety.”
