I have been reading predictions that the US health IT market is poised for significant consolidation, with the emerging health information exchange environment acting as a platform around which disparate entities will converge. A good example of the strange bedfellows that will join forces to offer comprehensive services to organizations connected to these health information exchanges is today’s announcement that Aetna, an insurance company, is buying Medicity, a health information exchange technology company.
Quoted in a ModernHealthcare.com article, Medicity founder Dr. J. Kipp Lassetter remarks that “Had you asked me just a month ago if I thought a healthcare benefits company could be the ideal partner to expand and enhance Medicity’s mission to be the preeminent connect health platform, I would have answered with some skepticism.”. What a difference a month can make!
I expect to see more such announcements. It will be interesting to see what other unlikely pairings we will see.
